This breed is known for its unique naturally - spotted coat, which features spots of varying sizes and shapes all over the body and limbs. The spots occur only on the tips of the hairs, and even if the fur is shaved, the patterns will still appear. A distinctive "M" - shaped tabby marking can be found on its forehead, resembling a scarab design. The Egyptian Mau has six colors, with silver, bronze, and smoke being the most common.

Egyptian Maus are not only visually appealing but also have an endearing personality. They are intelligent, friendly, and active, often showing their affection to their owners. Despite being energetic, they also enjoy curling up in their owners' laps. They are great with children and other cat - friendly pets, but may be reserved around strangers.

In terms of physical abilities, the Egyptian Mau is the fastest of the domestic cats. Its longer hind legs and a unique flap of skin extending from the flank to the back knee allow it to run at speeds of up to 48 km/h (30 mph).

The breed faced near - extinction during World War II, but was saved by Princess Natalie Troubetskoy. She began breeding Egyptian Maus in the 1950s, and the breed was recognized by the Cat Fanciers Federation in 1968, followed by other major cat associations in the subsequent years. Today, the Egyptian Mau remains a relatively rare breed worldwide, with fewer than 200 kittens registered with the GCCF each year.
